                                         Starting Over

I was born in the longest country of the world, a long ribbon at the very south of America with the driest desert of the world, my lovely country Chile.  After this brief sign of extreme patriotism, I will add that I was born in the capital city Santiago, and I’m the second of three sisters, we were a family of five.

I went to the same elementary school with my two sisters, actually my eldest sister and I were classmates which at that time was good, in case I got into trouble I had somebody who always backed me up.  After finishing school, I went to University and when I was in my second year, I got married and before finishing my bachelor's degree my first baby boy was born; four years later I had my second baby boy and then after two more years finally my baby girl, I was happy and I thought that was not going to have any more babies.

I worked for 10 years as secretary in different companies, and one day we made plans and decided to come to this country,  we arrived at Miami, Florida in the year 2000;  we planned to stay for some years so that the children can have the experience to live in another country and learn a new language. At that time my children were 14, 10 and 8 years old.  It was an adventure because it was the first time outside of my country and I didn't know what would happen but we were ready to start a new life.

Some things worked well but others didn't, I divorced and I moved to California with my boyfriend and had a baby girl who is 13 years now.  Living in this country was nice at the beginning, but when my visa expired and we started to live here illegally it was very hard to adjust because I was not used to work in jobs as minority, besides we didn't have friends here and most of the people who come here have different customs and origins, people that do not share our way of life.

Finally after 10 years of living illegal in this country I got my residence and could get a better job, then I started to think that I need to make a change in my life to get a better position and also a better job so I can earn more money and at the same time spend more time with my family.  I decided  it was not too late to study so I got back to college, I'm currently in my third semester to get a major degree in child development.  Later I will try to get my transcript of my Bachelor's degree in my country; at this moment are only plans but, who knows, life is a surprise and I love surprises!

I haven't come back to my country since I got here, 15 years now, so the only way to see my family is thanks to technology, we connect in Skype and I have the chance to see my mother and my sisters quite often, we are also connected in Facebook and What's up.  I like to post pictures for them and make comments on their pictures too.   I remember one special occasion, my sisters and nieces were preparing a Mother’s Day celebration for my mom, they got everything ready with decorations, food and drinks, and the cake, they showed me around with the camera I was connected to Skype on the computer; then they placed the camera so I can see my mom when she came into the living room, and there she came…. silence …. and surprise!!!  my mother  was looking around everything and all of a sudden she saw me on the TV screen waving my hand, she looked at my sisters and asked them if it was a video hahaha, she started to cry talking to me, I was crying, everybody was crying. After a while they sit down and started to talk to each other as if I was there, it was awesome, before finishing the Skype connection my mom and sisters stood close to the TV screen where I was and they took pictures and posted them on Facebook.  It was a wonderful Mother’s day we will never forget.

From that moment on, I learnt it was very useful to learn from media connections, despite being fun; I have had the opportunity to be able to meet people and also rekindling old friendships.

This year 2016 will be bring good things in my life, my eldest daughter came from Miami to live with me, she decided to go back to school too, I think in some way she was inspired by me;  I will learnt a lot from her to keep me up-dated with technology and media communications tools.
